Il castello di Chillon si trova in un luogo molto unico. La ragione per cui è stato costruito il castello su questo affioramento roccioso nel lago di Ginevra è la posizione strategica: scogliere ripide su un lato e dall'altro il lago, che in questo punto scende a 300 metri di profondità. Nell'età del bronzo non c'era un sentiero intorno al lago, il percorso passava a 200 metri più in alto sulle rocce. I Romani aprirono un sentiero stretto lungo la riva del lago. Inoltre, aprirono il grande passo del San Bernardo, che rese queste rotte l'unica via tra il Nord e il Sud Europa in quel periodo. Più tardi, nel Medioevo, il volume di traffico aumentò, il che rese possibile l'applicazione di pedaggi.
