Friedland è un comune nel distretto di Göttingen nell'angolo più meridionale della Bassa Sassonia, vicino al punto triplo con l'Assia e la Turingia. La storia postbellica di Friedland e dei suoi dintorni è stata segnata dal campo di Friedland, un campo di transito inizialmente per i tedeschi espulsi dalla patria. Il campo non solo rese famoso il nome di questo luogo in tutto il mondo, ma contribuì anche a raddoppiare il numero di abitanti precedenti. Il grado di notorietà del comune di Friedland portò alla proposta e all'adozione del nome “Friedland” per il nuovo grande comune, formato dai 14 villaggi circostanti, sebbene il comune di Groß Schneen fosse previsto e stabilito come sede amministrativa.
Il 1 gennaio 1973, il comune di Friedland è stato ricreato attraverso la fusione dei precedenti comuni di Ballenhausen, Deiderode, Elkershausen, Friedland, Groß Schneen, Klein Schneen, Lichtenhagen, Ludolfshausen, Mollenfelde, Niedergandern, Niedernjesa, Reckershausen, Reiffenhausen e Stockhausen.
