Il distretto di Bamberg è il distretto più occidentale della regione governativa di Oberfranken in Baviera. A ovest e a sud confina con i distretti di Unter- e Mittelfranken. La città di Bamberg è completamente circondata dal distretto.
A esso appartengono anche due enclave vicine della comunità di Pommersfelden a sud. Nella più grande si trovano il Limbacher Weiher e il Steinersee. L'area è completamente circondata dal distretto di Erlangen-Höchstadt e si trova a circa un chilometro dalla restante area del distretto, ma appartiene amministrativamente al distretto di Bamberg. Il distretto è membro della regione metropolitana di Norimberga.
