Il Lago Rantzauer si trova nella città di Barmstedt nel distretto di Pinneberg nel Schleswig-Holstein sudoccidentale. È lungo circa 420 metri e largo 280 metri, ha una superficie di 7,5 ha e non è profondo più di tre metri.
Negli anni dal 1934 al 1938, il lago fu scavato a mano su ordine dei nazisti dal Servizio Lavori del Reich. Il livello dell'acqua del Lago Rantzauer è regolato dallo sbarramento del Krückau, che lo alimenta. Questo intervento nella natura e la conseguente interruzione del sentiero migratorio per la fauna ittica locale hanno causato problemi in passato. Pertanto, nel 1981 è stata costruita una scala per pesci a nove gradini presso la diga dell'isola del castello, attraverso la quale i pesci possono ora riprendere la loro migrazione verso i luoghi di riproduzione superiori.
