Collega il centro città con i quartieri di Debschwitz e Heinrichsgrün situati a ovest del fiume e forma allo stesso tempo la strada di uscita occidentale della città, poiché la strada federale 2 qui attraversa l'Elster. Sul suo bordo orientale, il ponte con le strade Am Sommerbad da nord, Elsterdamm da sud e Heinrichstraße da est forma uno degli incroci stradali più grandi della città.
Le odierne strade Heinrichstraße e Straße des Friedens hanno sempre costituito la strada di uscita occidentale di Gera. Nel medioevo si trovava nel luogo dell'attuale ponte Heinrichs la prima traversata, che già nel 16° secolo fu sostituita dal primo ponte. La ponte è stata distrutta più volte da inondazioni o da ghiaccio.
