Caen è una città francese di 112.218 abitanti , capoluogo del dipartimento del Calvados, nella regione della Normandia, di cui è sede del Consiglio regionale. È attraversata dal fiume Orne.Già dall'epoca gallo-romana, nell'area dell'Abbazia degli uomini, è nota l'esistenza di un borgo fortificato. Successivamente, è ipotizzabile la presenza di una cappella intitolata a San Martino e un cimitero di epoca alto-medievale. Intorno al 1020, dopo l'impatto dell'invasione vichinga, nasce il primo nucleo cittadino, sede di un mercato.
