Dopo che la Germania dovette restituire il dipinto L'agnello di Dio al Belgio, come descritto nel Trattato di Versailles, e i belgi vedendo una minaccia in arrivo dalla seconda guerra mondiale, nel 1940 si decise di dare al dipinto un rifugio sicuro in Vaticano. Quando il dipinto era in viaggio verso il Vaticano, l'Italia dichiarò guerra insieme alla Germania e i piani furono modificati. Si decise di portare il dipinto a Pau in Francia.
