Le navi che partivano da località lungo il precedente Zuiderzee ancoravano nella rada di Texel per salpare verso le terre del Mar Baltico, Francia, Spagna, Portogallo e, in seguito, anche le Indie orientali.
Per proteggere le navi che si trovavano nella rada di Texel, Willem di Orange prese l'iniziativa di costruire il forte De Schans. De Schans fu costruito intorno al 1574.
Nel 1811 Napoleone visitò De Schans. Fece ampliare il forte e furono costruite fortificazioni a ovest ed est di De Schans: Lunette e Redoute.
Intorno al 1930, la Lunette, la Redoute e una parte di De Schans furono scavati per utilizzare il terreno per il rinforzo delle dighe. Nel frattempo, il forte De Schans è stato nuovamente restaurato in parte. È stato riportato il più possibile alla situazione del 1813.
