Il Groote Gat è un'area naturale eccezionale e un gioiello culturale e storico insieme. Le fortificazioni che facevano parte delle Linie Spagnole Olandesi durante la Guerra degli Ottant'anni (1568-1648) sono ancora visibili qui. Queste fortificazioni si trovano in un paesaggio variegato. Il Groote Gat è formato da un grande canale, circondato da campi di canne, arbusti, siepi, alberi potati e praterie umide. Questo crea un paesaggio vario in cui vivono diversi rari uccelli nidificanti.
Il canale nel Groote Gat era un tempo parte di un ampio sistema di canali che era in comunicazione con lo Zwin. Il Groote Gat è un residuo della via d'acqua di Bruges. Questa via d'acqua fu scavata tra il 1501 e il 1505 per prevenire l'interrimento dello Zwin, ma l'effetto desiderato non fu raggiunto.
