Nel 1856 fu vietato ad Amsterdam di fare i propri bisogni per strada. Per evitare che le oscure viuzze e i luoghi isolati diventassero ulteriormente dei bagni, la città installò 250 bagni in ghisa che puoi vedere in diversi luoghi come vicino alla stazione, Amstelveld, Prinsengracht e Sarphatipark.
Questi orinatoi in ghisa vengono chiamati "ricci" a causa della loro forma e anche "secreti". Quest'ultimo termine è diventato un insulto.
