Per controllare il commercio sull'importante fiume Hudson, la Compagnia delle Indie Occidentali o WIC, costruì un avamposto chiamato Nuova Amsterdam qui. Ma la colonia era minacciata dagli indiani e attaccata dai britannici. La WIC costruì un muro qui per difendersi. Quel muro è il nome di una delle strade più famose del mondo: Wall Street. Il muro è segnato sulla mappa di Jacques Cortelyou, Governatore Generale di Nuova Amsterdam in quel momento.
