We weten dat de wetenschapper Albert Einstein tijdens zijn vlucht uit Duitsland via De Haan passeerde in 1933.
Einstein was op dat ogenblik wereldberoemd want hij had de Nobelprijs voor natuurkunde ontvangen en de wetenschappelijke wereld grondig door elkaar geschud met zijn artikelen over de relativiteitstheorie. Als Jood en overtuigd pacifist vluchtte hij voor de gruwel van het opkomend nazisme in Duitsland. In De Haan ontmoette hij de beroemde schilder James Ensor. Ze tafelden er in het restaurant Au Coeur Volant op 2 augustus 1933. De Coeur Volant werd een 15 jaar geleden afgebroken en vervangen door een appertementsvilla. Er tegenover is er een pleintje waar enkele jaren geleden een standbeeld geplaatst werd van Einstein. De Coeur Volant was het enige 2 sterren restaurant dat de De Haan rijk was.
