Vanop de Uniebrug kan je vandaag het volledige IJzerfront overschouwen, tot en met de IJzertoren in Diksmuide. De Uniebrug is samen met de Schoorbakkebrug en Tervatebrug (Stuivekenskerke) van levensbelang. Wie de bruggen bezit, is baas over de IJzer.
Wanneer de toestand onhoudbaar wordt, blazen de Belgen de brug op. Toch raken de Duitsers over de IJzer en nemen ze Sint-Joris in. Gelukkig brengen de onderwaterzettingen op het nippertje redding.
Sint-Joris blijft gedurende vier jaar een Duitse voorpost, vlakbij de sluizen van Nieuwpoort, vanwaar de Belgen de onderwaterzetting onderhouden.
