Mijn eerste herinnering met hoog octaangehalte speelt zich af op de inmiddels verwijderde camping vlakbij La Source en de hoofdtribune van Francorchamps. Daar kwam ik als klein snotjoch samen met m'n vader kamperen tijdens de 24 uren van Spa-Francorchamps. Met het gebrul van de razende raceauto's op de achtergrond ging ik 's avonds slapen en in de ontieglijk vroege ochtend op 1 augustus 1993 werd ik wakker. Niet omwille van het motorlawaai, maar net omdat er een verontrustende stilte heerste over de bossen van Francorchamps. De organisatie had besloten om de race stil te leggen naar aanleiding van de dood van koning Boudewijn. Een drama voor iedere vijfjarige petrolhead dat ik zoveel jaren later nog steeds niet vergeten ben.
