Schmallenberg was het centrum van de metaalindustrie in de 19de eeuw. Nadien ontwikkelde zich hier textielindustrie. De bijnaam van de stad, "Strumpfstadt" refereert naar de textielactiviteit van het bedrijf Falke dat hier sokken maakt. Nu werkt ongeveer een kwart van de bevolking in de hout-industrie, bosbouw en toerisme. Schmallenberg heeft tal van wandel-trails rondom de stad die je in de bossen en heuvels leidt. In totaal meer dan 2.500 km.
