Het werd omstreeks 1230 gebouwd door Otto I van Schaumberg, die zich vanaf dat moment naar zijn nieuwe kasteel in het Frankenwald Otto van Schauenstein noemde. Hij was sinds 1222 ministeriaal van de hertogen van Andechs-Meranien en stierf in 1237. Zijn zoon Eberhard I en zijn kleinkinderen Tuto en Heinrich III van Schauenstein bezaten het kasteel tot 1271. Daarna gingen het kasteel en de rechtbank naar de dochter van Heinrich. Zij trouwde met Konrad van Wolfstriegel, waardoor Schauenstein in het bezit van deze familie kwam en daarmee onder de invloed van de voogden van Weida en later de burggrafen van Neurenberg viel. Daarna werd het de zetel van de ambtenaren van Brandenburg-Kulmbach, waarvan de eerste Erhart van Machwitz was.
Het kasteel is sinds 1988 de zetel van het Oberfränkische brandweermuseum en het Heimatmuseum Schauenstein.
