De Rantzauer See ligt in de stad Barmstedt in de regio Pinneberg in het zuidwesten van Sleeswijk-Holstein. Hij is ongeveer 420 bij 280 meter groot, heeft een oppervlakte van 7,5 ha en is niet dieper dan drie meter.
Van 1934 tot 1938 werd het meer op verzoek van de nationaal-socialisten handmatig uitgegraven door de Reichsarbeitsdienst. Het waterniveau van het Rantzauer Meer wordt geregeld door de ophoping van de Krückau, die het meer voedt. Deze ingreep in de natuur en de daarmee gepaard gaande onderbreking van het wandelpad voor de lokale vispopulatie heeft in het verleden voor problemen gezorgd. Daarom werd in 1981 een negentraps vistrap gebouwd aan de stuwdam van het kasteel-eiland, waardoor de vissen nu hun trek naar de hogere paaiplaatsen weer konden voortzetten.
