Quintus Postumius Potens heeft zijn gelofte aan de godin Diana vervuld (en de steen aan haar gewijd).
Het is in de 2e eeuw n.Chr. opgericht als gewijde steen ter ere van de godin Diana. Vermoedelijk wilde een welvarende geromaniseerde lokale bewoner hiermee Diana bedanken voor een buitengewone succesvolle jacht of voor haar hulp bij gevaar. De Dianacultus was in de Eifel tot in de late middeleeuwen in de gehele samenleving een onderdeel van het volksgeloof. Volgens de legende heeft de heilige Willibrord tijdens de christianisatie van het gebied persoonlijk de gedenksteen vernield.
