George Orwell melde zich als vrijwilliger bij de militie, tijdens de Spaanse Burgeroorlog. George Orwell melde zich bij de Partido Obrero de Unificacion Marxista of POUM. Hij beschreef dat hij in Barcelona (1936) voor het eerst een stad had betreden waar de arbeidersklasse echt in het zadel zat. In die tijd was het stierenvechten totaal uitgesloten want de beste matadors waren fascisten. In 1937 begon de zuivering van de communistische groepen in Barcelona waar zowel George Orwell toe behoorde als de Belgische ingenieur George Kopp. George Orwell en zijn vrouw konden ontsnappen, maar George Kopp verdween in één van de geheime gevangenissen.
