Wist je dat het onbeduidende bergstadje Numantia een soort opstandig Asterix dorp was. Ze hadden het aangedufd het Romeinse juk af te werpen. Ze dwongen Romeinse legioen na legioen zich over te geven of zich terug te trekken. In 134 voor Christus stuurden de Romeinen Scipio Aemilianus, Romes belangrijkste generaal die Cathagena had vernield. Hij kreeg 30.000 soldaten, maar hij vocht niet. Hij omcirkelde Numantia. Na meer dan een jaar was de voorraad van voedsel op. Toen de Numantians beseften dat het allemaal voorbij was, hebben ze hun eigen stad afgebrand. De meesten hebben zelfmoord gepleegd. Numantia werd een symbool van Spaanse onafhankelijkheid en moed. Miguel Cervantes schreef er een tragedie over: "The Siege of Numantia". Alejo Vera maakte er een schilderij van.
