De Tour de Constance is het embleem van het koninklijke verleden van Aigues-Mortes. Aigues-Mortes had ook zijn deel in de godsdienstoorlogen. In 1705 werd de "Tour de Constance" een gevangenis voor protestanten. Abraham Mazel slaagde erin te ontsnappen uit de toren, maar Marie Durand bleef 38 jaar gevangen tot ze in 1768 overleed. Ze werd een symbool van heldhaftigheid en moed.
