De plaats waar de Opera Garnier werd gebouwd was enorm vochtig. Ondanks acht pompen kon men de grond maar niet droog krijgen. De architect Garnier bouwde daarom een betonnen cisterne waar het water werd opgevangen. Zo ontstond de legende dat de opera was gebouwd op een ondergronds meer. Dat verhaal werd ook gebruikt in The Phantom of the Opera, het verhaal van Gaston Leroux. Er is ook een legende dat hier forellen in dat meer zouden gekweekt zijn.
