Sinds 1700 zouden zowat tien miljoen mensen die op het eiland geboren zijn hun heil elders hebben gezocht. Dat resulteert in een 'diaspora' van zeventig miljoen mensen wereldwijd die zich op een of andere manier verwant voelen met Ierland.
De Grote Hongersnood was een van de cruciale drijfveren daarachter. Tussen 1846 en 1852 zouden twee miljoen mensen het eiland hebben verlaten. Ze vestigden zich voornamelijk in de VS, Canada, Groot-Brittannië, Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland.
