Het Romeinse Forum, Forum Romanum, (hoewel de Romeinen het vaker het Forum Magnum of gewoon het Forum noemden) was het centrale gebied waar het oude Rome zich ontwikkelde, waarin handel en de rechtspraak plaatsvonden. De gemeenschappelijke haard bevond zich hier ook. Het werd gebouwd op de plaats van een oud kerkhof.
Sequenties van restanten van bestrating tonen aan dat sediment dat van de omliggende heuvels was geërodeerd, in de vroege Republiek al het niveau van het forum verhief. Oorspronkelijk was het moerassige grond, die door de Tarquins werd drooggelegd met de Cloaca Maxima. Het definitieve travertijnbestrating, dat nog zichtbaar is, stamt uit de regeerperiode van Augustus.
