De boog was de oude Porta di San Maurizio al Ponte in de dertiende-eeuwse muren en dankte zijn naam aan de kleine kerk van San Maurizio (in de volksmond Samoreci genoemd) en aan de ophaalbrug die net buiten lag.
Tegenwoordig is het een rondboog met een zolder ondersteund door kraagstenen en met twee nissen aan de binnenkant waar zich bustes van Medici-groothertogen bevinden.
