Er zijn aanwijzingen dat dit gebouw zich bevindt op de plaats waar Cortes en zijn vertaler en geliefde Malinche ooit leefden. Het werd zo genoemd omdat het een van de weinige huizen is die zijn gebouwd van vulkanisch gesteente (en niet van natuursteen), met een typische rode kleur, en versierd met ajaracas, een Moorse invloed die hier door de Spanjaarden werd gebracht. Deze steen is licht, en overal in de regio verkrijgbaar. Terwijl je naar de deur kijkt, zie je dat deze loodrecht tegenover de ingang van de kerk is.
