Willem Janszoon Blaeu, de beroemde kaartenmaker, werd in 1571 nabij Alkmaar geboren. Hij was de zoon van een welgestelde haringverkoper. Zijn toekomst zou ook in de haringhandel zijn. Hij trekt naar Amsterdam om daar een haringhandel op te zetten. Maar dat wordt een teleurstelling. Hij vertrekt naar Denemarken waar hij assistent wordt van de grote astronoom Tycho Brahe.
