Op 14 mei 1940 werd op Rotterdam het 3de grootste Duitse stadsbombardement van de Luftwaffe gehouden. Guernica in Spanje en Warschau in Polen, waren reeds voordien geweest. Het overgrote deel van de binnenstad werd in puin gelegd en 900 mensen werden gedood. De Nederlands Generaal Henri Winkelman gaf zich na 5 dagen over.
