BBC Travel selecteerde Giethoorn als een van de 6 mooiste grachtsteden in de wereld. Deze kleine stad buiten Amsterdam ontwikkelde zich in moerassen. De oplossing van de 12e eeuwse turfboeren was om kanalen te graven om hun goederen te vervoeren. Giethoorn bezit nog 6.4km waterwegen, doorkruist door meer dan 150 houten loopbruggen, met weelderige voortuinen, huizen met rieten daken tot aan de rand van het water. De wegen strekken zich niet uit tot de centrale oude stad. De 2.500 bewoners gaan meestal an de ene plaats naar de andere via punteren.
