Het ligt ten noordwesten van Stiens en ten noordoosten van Sint Annaparochie, aan het oostelijke eind van de Oudebildtdijk. Door het dorp stroomt de Oude Rijd. In 2021 telde het 950 inwoners.Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap Nieuwebildtzijl en een groot boerenbedrijf van het dorp Oude Leije valt binnen het dorpsgebied van Oudebildtzijl. In 1948 heeft het dorp de dorpsstatus gekregen, daarvoor viel het onder het dorp Vrouwenparochie.
