Munic és la capital del Bundesland de Baviera i la tercera ciutat més gran d'Alemanya, després de Berlín i Hamburg, amb una població d'uns 1.234.000 habitants . Aquest fet la converteix en la dotzena ciutat en habitants de la Unió Europea. Representa un dels centres més importants a nivell econòmic, cultural i logístic del país i destaca pel seu desenvolupament i projecció de futur dins l'Europa unida. A la seva regió metropolitana s'hi compten en total uns 2,6 milions d'habitants.
El seu punt més alt és el Warnberg, situat al dinovè districte , amb una alçada de 519m. La cota més baixa, de 492m, es troba al nord, en el districte de Feldmoching.
