Sota el regnat de Felip II, el corregidor cordovès va ordenar la construcció d'una font per millorar l'abastament d'aigua del barri .
Construït l'any 1577 , va ser coronat un segle més tard pel graciós poltre que la cavalcava. Originàriament es trobava on actualment hi ha el Triomf de Sant Rafael , però es va traslladar a la seva ubicació actual l'any 1847. Sembla que el nom d'aquesta plaça i de la font prové del cavallet , i també se suposa que va rebre el nom del fonda del mateix nom.
