L'arribada del Teatre Politeama l'any 1865, que avui és la prestigiosa seu de la Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana , va fer d'aquest lloc una fita tan important per a la ciutat de Palerm , tant pel que fa a la ubicació com al protagonisme, que fins i tot les dues grans places Piazza Ruggero Settimo i Piazza Castelnuovo s'anomenen comunament Piazza Politeama.
La plaça representa una de les places més populars de la ciutat. Parelles, amics i sobretot patinadors de tots els orígens es troben davant del famós teatre.
L'any 1875, la poderosa família Florio, que tenia la seva vil·la a la Piazza Castelnuovo, va construir el Palchetto della musica , destinat a rebre bandes de música per a festes, fires i esdeveniments. Tanmateix, el propòsit real de la construcció era evitar que la Piazza Castelnuovo fos utilitzada per a habitatges.
