Aalter er med et areal på 119 km² en af de største kommuner i provinsen Østflandern i Belgien. Den ligger i det såkaldte Meetjesland og har 29.182 indbyggere. Arkæologiske fund fra de seneste årtier viser, at Aalter-området allerede var beboet i forhistorisk tid. Der er fundet en række stenartefakter på palæontologiske fundsteder, som kan dateres til årene 3000 til 2000 f.Kr. Arkæologer fandt også rester af en bronzeøkse, som efter undersøgelse sandsynligvis blev fremstillet mellem 1200 og 1000 f.Kr.
