Før det var muligt at vande kvæg og heste i stald eller på marken, var det nødvendigt at føre flokken til en vandingsplads flere gange om dagen. Det var et hårdt og tidskrævende arbejde.
I landsbyer, der ligger for langt væk fra en flod eller sø, måtte dyrene stille deres tørst ved vandtrug (som blev forsynet af den nærmeste kilde).
Der findes 2 typer af rektangulære trug. Det ene har et dobbeltvask; overløbet fra det første vaskekar forsyner det andet. Sandsynligvis blev disse kar også brugt som toiletter. De andre, ældre affaldsspande har kun et vaskekar.
