Om kommunens område hører Affegünt, Bremsdieck, Dallacker, Düttnis, Gunneby, Hestoft, Kius, Knappersfeld, Ulsnis, Ulsniskirchenholz og Ulsnisland til. 1,5 km vest for Kius ligger skovområdet Kiuser Gehege. I sin nuværende form har kommunen eksisteret siden 1974.
Stedet Ulsnis blev første gang nævnt i 1349 som Vlfsnees. De nuværende delområder Ulsnis, Hestoft, Kius og to gårde fra Gunneby hørte efter 1509 til bøssen Ulsnis, som igen var underlagt domkapitlet i Schleswig. Biskoppen af Schleswig havde i 1504 købt disse ejendomme med de tilhørende landbrug fra den sidste sekulære ejer af godset Hesselgaard. Indtil da var indbyggerne undersåtter af herrerne fra Hesselgaard. Hermed adskilte Ulsnis sig fra andre dele af Angeln, der kendetegnes ved sine frie bønder på bondegårdene. I 1770 blev domkapitlet opløst, hvorefter nogle lokale husmænd og kættere fik tildelt jorden, herunder andele af skovarealer. Ulsnis blev en del af den nabostående Harde.
