Kommunens område består af delområderne Mittelberg og Petersthal. Med en højde på 1035 m over NHN er Mittelberg den højest beliggende bydel i kommunen og en af de højeste i Tyskland.
Mittelberg nævnes første gang skriftligt omkring år 800 som et sted for tiende Wertach. Området Oy-Mittelberg tilhørte indtil Reichsdeputationshauptschluss og sekulariseringen i 1803 til Højstift Augsburg, siden da har stedet tilhørt Bayern. I 1822 blev Mittelberg, bortset fra kirken og præstegården, offer for en storbrand.
