Hessisch Lichtenau ligger ca. 20 km sydøst for Kassel mellem den 643,4 m høje Kaufunger Wald mod nord, Hohen Meißner mod øst, Stölzinger Gebirge med Eisberg mod sydøst og Günsteröder Höhe med Himmelsberg mod sydvest. Den dal, der er omkranset af disse bjergkæder, kaldes Hessisch-Lichtenauer Becken, som ligesom kernebyen Hessisch Lichtenau gennemstrømmes af Losse og tilhører Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land.
