Prins Leopold von Salm-Salm, som gav sit navn til det senere miner i Hervest-Dorsten, indgik aftaler med minefirmaerne om bore- og udvindingsrettigheder. Regalherren havde ret til en procent af salgsprisen på den udvundne kul, hvilket dog kunne afløses gennem engangsbetalinger. Boringerne var ekstremt vanskelige på grund af flydesand og kunne kun udføres ved hjælp af frysemetoden. I 1913 udvandt minen Fürst Leopold den første kul med en årlig kapacitet på oprindeligt 39.000 tons. Et 900 meter langt spor forbindede minen med statsbanegården Hervest-Dorsten.
