Den nuværende by, oprindeligt kendt som Joviniacum på latin, blev grundlagt i romertiden af Flavius Jovinus, præfekt for den romerske milits i Gallien i år 369 e.Kr. I middelalderen blev den befæstet som en fæstning i slutningen af det 10. århundrede af Renard I den Gamle, grev af Sens, på en del af jorden fra Sainte-Marie du Charnier de Sens-klosteret.
