Hævet til provinsens hovedstad ved dekret fra republikens præsident den 6. marts 1992, fik den titlen som by den 22. juni 1848, og i dag overstiger dens byområde hundrede tusinde indbyggere. Kendt for at være stedet, hvor forfatteren Alessandro Manzoni placerede I promessi sposi, ligger byen i en af toppe af Triangolo Lariano, på den venstre vandløb af Adda, samt er beliggende ved den østlige gren af Comosøen og er beliggende i For-Alperne, mellem Grigne-gruppen og Resegone.
