Oslo er Norges hovedstad og største by. Det er også navnet på en provins og kommune; kommunen og provinsen Oslo overlapper hverandre helt. Oslo har cirka 693.494 innbyggere og ligger i den søreise delen av landet, ved begynnelsen av Oslofjorden.
Ifølge norske sagn ble Oslo grunnlagt rundt 1048 av kong Harald Hardråde. Nylig arkeologisk forskning har avdekket kristne gravplasser fra før 1000, noe som er bevis for teorien om at urbaniseringen av området rundt Oslo hadde begynt tidligere.
