Heidenreichstein ist eine Stadtgemeinde mit 3864 Einwohnern im Bezirk Gmünd im nordwestlichen Waldviertel in Niederösterreich.Den Namen verdankt Heidenreichstein einem der ersten Burggrafen, der Heidenreich hieß. Die in Privatbesitz befindliche und nach wie vor bewohnte Burg Heidenreichstein ist eine Wasserburg und gilt als Wahrzeichen von Heidenreichstein. Der Markt dürfte ebenso wie die Burg in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 12. Jahrhunderts entstanden sein. Im Jahr 1369 wurde der Ort als Markt mit eigenem Siegel bezeichnet.
