Mit einer Fläche von 18,42 Quadratkilometern und mit 2913 Einwohnern ist Grein flächenmäßig die fünfzehntgrößte und bezogen auf die Einwohneranzahl die siebtgrößte Gemeinde des Bezirks. Grein ist seit 1491 die drittälteste Stadt des Mühlviertels und Hauptort des Strudengaus.Die Stadt war bis Ende 2002 Standort des ehemaligen Bezirksgerichts Grein, das für die zehn Gemeinden des Gerichtsbezirks Grein zuständig war. Seit Beginn des Jahres 2003 gehört Grein zum Gerichtsbezirk Perg, das zuständige Bezirksgericht befindet sich seither in der Bezirkshauptstadt Perg.
