Im Jahr 2021 wurde der Zoniënwald Teil des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes. In Europa sind Buchenwälder Teil unseres natürlichen, geografischen und historischen Erbes. Jetzt wird der Buchenwald als Urwald rar. Doch einst war Europa reich mit dieser Art von Habitat bedeckt. Um dieses schwindende Stück europäisches Erbe zu bewahren, suchte man nach einzigartigen und originellen Teilen dieses Buchenwald-Urwaldes. Man wählte eine Reihe von 78 Buchenwäldern in Europa aus. Einer davon befindet sich im Zoniënwald. Und noch spezifischer, der Kernzone, die wir als Waldreservat Joseph Zwaenepoel in Groenendaal kennen.
