Binche ist römischen Ursprungs. Es liegt an einem wichtigen Verkehrsknoten mitten in einer reichen, landwirtschaftlich geprägten Gegend. Seit dem 11./12. Jahrhundert bauten die Grafen von Hennegau auf dem vom Fluss Samme umflossenen Felsvorsprung einen imposanten Bergfried, an den sich das Renaissanceschloss von Marie von Ungarn, Regentin der Niederlande, lehnt.
Im 12. Jahrhundert errichtete Balduin IV., Graf von Hennegau, eine erste Stadtmauer aus vielen Steinen, aber auch aus Holz. Im 14.
Jahrhundert wurde die große Stadtmauer gebaut, deren Gesamtlänge 2 km beträgt und von der bis heute nur 300 m sowie 5 von 30 Türmen und die Tore abgerissen wurden.
