Im Teilgebiet der Kleizone hat die Maas vielleicht einst Ton abgelagert. Nach dem Abbau des Tons wurden die Gruben mit Kiesabfällen und Decksand aus den übrigen Kiesgruben wieder aufgefüllt. Jetzt wird das Gebiet im Sommer gemäht und von selbstständigen großen Weidetieren abgegrast. Nicht nur die Kiesbauern, sondern auch die Biber sind Architekten des Maas-Tals. Sie nagen an Bäumen, bauen Burgen und sorgen so für Abwechslung in der Vegetation der Ufer. Auch in der Kleizone sind sie aktiv und man kann besonders im Winter viele Biber-Spuren finden. Es sind echte Nacht tiere, die mit ihrem Nagen dafür sorgen, dass Bäume ins Wasser fallen und Bäche durch diese Hindernisse wieder auf natürliche Weise schlängeln. Der Holzsteg sorgt dafür, dass du trockene Füße behältst!
