Wo Wasser ist, stehen oder standen Mühlen. An der Herk in Wellen kann man noch die Graetermolen und die Wellenmolen sehen. Sie stehen jetzt bei der Graetermolen. Beide Mühlen waren einst aktiv als Getreidewassermühlen. Das Bett der Herk wurde für diese Mühlen bereits im 13. Jahrhundert vom tiefstgelegenen Teil des Tals etwas höher verlegt. Diese Verlegung und später die Begradigung, Verbreiterung und Vertiefung der Herk hatten große Auswirkungen auf den Wasserhaushalt des Gebiets. Ganz zu schweigen von der Wasserqualität. Glücklicherweise nimmt diese durch bessere Wasserreinigung und Anschlüsse an die Kanalisation Stück für Stück zu. Und das ist gut für die Natur sowohl im Broekbeemd als auch im Großen Beemd.
