Die Scheldemeersen von Zevergem-Schelderode bilden eines der wenigen Reste einer zusammenhängenden Wiesenlandschaft im Scheldetal. Die Gegend zeichnet sich durch den Wechsel von Wiesen, abgeschnittenen Mäandern, Pappelanpflanzungen und durch Gräben unterteilten Wiesenparzellen aus. Der im Scheldetal abgelagerte alluviale Ton wurde von den Ziegelfabriken in der Umgebung abgebaut, wodurch Lehmgruben in der Landschaft zurückblieben.
