Die Kommende Pitzenburg wurde um das Jahr 1200 durch den „ Orden der Johanniter Unserer Lieben Frau von den Deutschen zu Jerusalem“ (Deutscher Orden) während der Kreuzzüge in Palästina gegründet.
Über die ersten Bautätigkeiten ist nichts bekannt . Ein Stich von 1580 zeigt ein Gebäude mit Hof und Kapelle . 1664 wurde ein blaues Steintor gebaut. Es war mit der Kapelle verbunden.
Während der französischen Ära in Belgien wurde Pitzemburg 1794 beschlagnahmt und als Staatseigentum verkauft . 1822 wurde die Kapelle gekauft und vollständig abgerissen . Alles andere kaufte die Stadt Mechelen 1827. Die alte barocke Ordensresidenz wurde ab 1832 für die städtische Bildung genutzt.
Aus dem 1836 abgerissenen Tor ließ er zwei Eingangspavillons errichten.
